THE Zimbabwe beach volleyball team scooped silver medals at the Beach Volleyball (BVB) Sub Zonal Qualifications that were held in Maputo, Mozambique.

Zimbabwe Beach Volleyball coach Kudzai Sibangani said they had targeted a top two finish and the ladies’ team worked hard and come second with Mozambique sealing top spot in tournament.

“We didn’t really get the result we wanted as the men’s team failed to make it through but still the ladies managed to bring a smile to our faces. There was stiff competition as our zone is one of the powerhouses in the continent in terms of beach volleyball with the likes of Mozambique, South Africa and Angola.

“The ladies played well and won all their matches to top their group which had Botswana and Zambia. We went on to play the hosts Mozambique who beat us in the final,” said Sibangani.

The men lost to Mozambique and Zambia, resulting in their dreams of going to the Tokyo Olympics going up in smoke.

The tournament saw six countries from the zone namely Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Botswana participating.

Sibangani said the ladies still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics as they still have another round to play ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
