A 27-YEAR-OLD woman was raped and robbed in a bushy area near Entumbane suburb by a man who was impersonating a police officer.

The incident happened on Monday this week shortly after 7pm.

A source close to the incident said the woman, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, boarded a pirating commuter omnibus from Renkini bus terminus to her home in Cowdray Park suburb.

When they were near a fuel station, which is situated near Matshobane suburb, the commuter omnibus developed a fault and the driver parked it. He refused to refund passengers of their money.

A man who was a passenger in the commuter omnibus, befriended the lady in question and told her that he was a police officer.

“He further told her that he stays at Entumbane Police Station. She fell prey to his lies and decided to put up at her relative’s place at Entumbane suburb. They agreed to walk home along a footpath, when they had walked for about 100 metres and were at a secluded place, the man turned violent,” said the source.

It is alleged he picked a stone and threatened to attack her with it. And demanded cash. The woman could not resist his orders.

“He pulled her to the bush and ordered her to lie down facing upwards he then raped her, after that he took her cash amounting to US$52 and fled, leaving the woman stranded in the bush,” said a source.

The woman reported the matter at Entumbane Police Station. She was referred to the hospital for a medical examination.

Bulawayo acting police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident. She warned members of the public against using secluded footpaths and discouraged people from trusting strangers.

“We have received numerous reports of people who were attacked when they were walking along footpaths to their homes. We would like to discourage community members from putting their lives at risk. And they must not trust mere strangers because some of them are criminals,” she warned.
