Controversial Zim Dancehall king Winky D is riding the crest of a wave after scooping the Best Male Artiste-Southern Africa accolade, at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) courtesy of his smash hit Happy Again.

The AFRIMA, which is the biggest annual music awards on the continent, that celebrates and recognises different creatives in music around Africa, took place in Dakar, Senegal last night (15 January).

The Gafa has many nicknames attesting to his greatness in musical circles and is trending courtesy of his controversial latest album Eureka Eureka.

“Messi we Reggae” as Winky is also affectionately known by his ever-growing legion of fans, is simply in a class of his own and superlatives like “the best of the best” or “cream of the crop” are becoming too mundane to describe him.

The Truthsayer- another of his monikers- shrugged off stiff competition from DJ Tarico, Gemini Major, Focalistic, Kabza De Small, Muskateers, Master KG and Zakes Bantwini.

After bagging the award, the Extraterrestrial- another nickname pointing to the fact that he could be superhuman- took to social media and thanked his fans for making his dream come to reality.

“My musical heart continues to overflow with boundless gratitude. I will continue appreciating the support you give me.

“Having you behind my music remains a blessing l can’t exchange for anything in this life. The love you have showered my music remains overwhelming. It remains the biggest inspiration to my musical dreams,” posted The BigMan on his Facebook page.

Other notable winners at the AFRIMAs are Nigerian megastar Burna Boy who took home the award for Best Album and Best African Act.

Afro-Beats global icons Davido and Wizkid also recorded wins.

Davido won the Best Inspirational Song for ‘Stand Strong’ and Best African Pop for ‘High’ for his collaboration with Adekunle Gold. Wizkid took home the Best West African Act award.
