THE Zimbabwe senior national soccer team booked their third consecutive Afcon berth last week Thursday after edging neighbours Botswana 1-0 in their Francistown backyard. It was a win that came courtesy of a strike by Tanzania based debutant, Perfect Chikwende. Chikwende’s wonder goal was the Warriors’ sixth of the campaign.
Poster boy Khama Billiat scored two while the trio of captain Knowledge Musona, Prince Dube and Tinotenda Kadewere all found the back of the net once. From a total of six games, Zimbabwe won twice against Zambia and Botswana (all away), drew twice against Algeria and Botswana at home.
That 2-1 victory over Chipolopolo in Lusaka, in Joey Antipas’ final match in charge of the team proved to be very much important just like the positive result they picked in Francistown. This means the senior national team finished their group stage matches without winning a single game at home.
Coach Zdravko Logarušic’s charges suffered two defeats at the hands of Algeria and Zambia to finish their campaign with eight points, six goals and managing to keep two clean sheets. Zimbabwe finished their campaign six goals for eight goals against, to leave them on a worrying goals difference of -2. From a possible 18 points they managed to amass eight which translates to a 44% success rate.
