TWO Zimbabwean men have been arrested in Botswana for alleged stock theft and are expected in court soon.

Their accomplice, a Motswana, was also arrested during an operation that started last month.

“Two Zimbabwean males aged 37 and 40 and a Motswana man aged 34 have been arrested for stock theft in the Boteti Sub District.

“The two Zimbabweans, who were working as herdsmen were arrested at Xigao cattle post while the Motswana man was arrested at a butchery that he owns,” said a statement from the Botswana Police Service.

Five head of cattle, believed to have been stolen from nearby farms were recovered.

The operation has so far netted 51 suspects.

In Zimbabwe stock theft carries a mandatory sentence of nine years in prison.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has repeatedly warned that it will not hesitate to arrest abattoirs and butchery owners who fuel cattle rustling by purchasing stolen cattle.

According to data availed by ZRP in 2018, the country records about 20 cases of stock theft a day nationwide.

It’s a figure the National Anti-Stock Theft Taskforce has been working hard to bring down over the years.
