Zimbabwe-born Queen of AmaPiano Sha Sha real name Charmaine Shamiso Mapimbiro has revealed that her first BET nomination was made possible because of working with different artistes.
These mainly include her paymaster DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small and former South African Acapella group The Soil’s Samthing Soweto.
Her 2019 Extended Play (EP) Blossom which features smash hits such as Mutare, which praises the place where she was born and bred, Tender Love and Abondaba, matured and flowered smoothly to the extent of making her the first Zimbabwean artiste to land a BET nomination.
She is nominated in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act alongside other new world voices including Stacey (France), Rema (Nigeria) and United Kingdom’s duo of Young T and Bugsey and Celeste.
The 25-year-old vocalist said she never saw the BET nomination coming.
“Despite the hard work I put into my music, I never thought I would receive a BET nomination. I have always had the right people to work with around me. We all have the same vision and I believe that has made it easy for Blossom to break the grounds and be recognised on world stages,” said Sha Sha.
She owes it all to DJ Maphorisa.
“I met DJ Maphorisa by chance. I met him through my cab driver and I made sure he sampled my compositions hence he fell in love with them and we started working together as he is such a visionary creative.
“As it took me six years to complete the Blossom project, I knew it was the right time for me to shine the moment I met Maphorisa as I knew with him I would create a solid foundation in my career which resulted in this BET nomination,” said Sha Sha.
The 2020 edition of BET Awards will be aired on 28 June.
