BULAWAYO’s Warriors and Plumtree High School were last weekend crowned champions in the boys and girls’ third edition of the Under-18 IBF 3×3 Basketball Qualifiers played at Petra High School.

It was a contest that featured 10 teams drawn from Bulawayo and Plumtree High School from Matabeleland South.

For their efforts, Warriors and Plumtree High will proceed to the national finals that will be held in Gweru on Saturday.

The two teams will carry the hopes of the country’s Southern Region together with Dominican Convent Panthers who came out as the first runners-up in the girls’ category in a day where similar competitions were staged  in Harare, Gweru, Kwekwe, Mutare, Masvingo and Marondera.

National finals champions will represent the country in the IBF 3×3 Young Lions Cup in Botswana from 28 November to 2 December.

Zimbabwe Under-18 boys and girls are two-time champions in the 3×3 Young Lions Cup in Southern Africa.

Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) competitions president Yesaya Ignatious said: “We are looking forward to having 12 teams in the national finals where eventual winners will get the tickets to represent the country in Botswana,” said Ignatious.

Zimbabwe Under-18 boys and girls are two-time champions in the 3×3 Young Lions Cup in Southern Africa.

Tracey Phiri, who is the 3×3 Basketball Bulawayo provincial co-ordinator, said it was prudent for the local sport-loving fraternity to embrace the sporting discipline

“3×3 is a new, fast and entertaining way of playing basketball. In Europe, it is highly recognised with competitions such as the World Tour and has huge sponsorship.

“There is no minor sport and each discipline grows according to how we make it. The qualifiers present local companies with opportunities of marketing their products. They can do so by sponsoring the new sports code,” said Phiri.
