Tale of a top goal scorer

INDIVIDUAL success but team failure is a curse every player despises.

William Manondo is one football player who drudgingly celebrates his personal success with a sense of despair.

Fourteen goals in 24 games for Caps United is a great feat.

It’s a stuff of legends, so to speak, as far as local scoring records are concerned.

Considering that there are more than 10 games to go before the curtain comes down on the current season, more goals are expected from Manondo.

But his success is not translating to the glory of his team – Caps United.

Sitting on 12th position with 29 points gained from 24 games, it’s not all green on the side of the Green Machine.

Soccer analyst Muziwethu Hadebe says experience is playing a larger role in Manondo’s success story compared to the overall performance of Caps United.

“Manondo is reaching the twilight zone of his career, so he wants to impress every club that he plays for in order to keep his place in the matchday squad. What is happening at Caps United is a player who is experienced and utilising his chances despite the fact that the team is struggling.

“He is no longer a young player so every opportunity to play for Caps United is a chance for Manondo to score goals and leave a mark in the league,” said Hadebe.

In comparison, the player that is hot on the heels of Manondo is young footie Brian Muza, with 10 goals to his name for Bulawayo side Chicken Inn.

Hadebe is not surprised that young Muza is impressing folks in the local league.

“Remember, this is Muza’s first season in the PSL and for a young player like him, it’s impressive how he has adapted to the top flight league.

“Muza is not a typical out and out striker so to speak yet his goal scoring record is catching the eyes of football fans across the country,” said the football analyst.

Chicken Inn is in third position with 45 points from 24 matches.

For now, we say ‘All Hail King Manondo’ for the 14 goals in the Castle Premier Soccer League this far.

But tough luck to Caps United, for your log standings do not reflect the glorious story of your striker Manondo
