THE selection of the country’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Stars for the just concluded 2021/2022 season is set for Friday.
Football journalists, PSL club captains and coaches will select the 11 most outstanding players during the 2021/2022 campaign. The voting process will be done online, a shift from the traditional gatherings.
The local elite football league concluded on Sunday and champions FC Platinum received their fourth consecutive league title on Saturday to reaffirm their dominance in the Zimbabwean topflight league.
Chicken Inn and Dynamos finished second and third respectively in a season where FC Platinum’s trio of goalkeeper Wallace Magalane, Walter Musona and Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya are expected to be selected among the 11 soccer stars.
Also expected to make it into the list are Chicken Inn duo of Brian Muza and towering defender Itai Mabunu.
United’s William Manondo who enjoyed a free-scoring season is also highly tipped to be selected alongside left-footed Black Rhinos captain Farai Banda and his teammate Eli Ilanga. Following their five-star performances in Highlanders colours striker Lynoth Chikuhwa and diminutive Devine Mhindirira are also among the favourites to be selected.
The selectors will also vote for the best player of the year and other individual awards like the coach, referee and rookie of the year but only be announced at an event to be held on 2 December in Harare.
Ex-Highlanders midfielder Joel “Josta” Ngodzo is the reigning Soccer Star of the Year. He clinched the country’s top football accolade in 2019 before the game went on a Covid-19-induced freeze the following season.
