A 33-YEAR-OLD man from Old Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo has appeared in court facing charges of striking his sister with a pot following a misunderstanding over witchcraft accusations.

Nkosilathi Ncube pleaded guilty to a charge of physical abuse as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) as read with Section 4 of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16 when he appeared before Western Commonage court magistrate Shepherd Mjanja.

The magistrate slapped him with 12 months in prison of which six months of the sentence were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next three years.

The remaining six months were suspended on condition that he completes 105 hours of community service at Premier High School in Pumula South suburb.

The court heard that on 13 November and at around 8pm, Mejury Ncube (38) was at home with her children in Old Lobengula suburb when Nkosilathi came and knocked at the gate.

When her children opened for him, the court heard that Nkosilathi went straight into his sister’s house and started accusing her of bewitching him and that she was also the one who caused his wife to abandon him.

A misunderstanding arose between the two parties and as a result of the accusations and at the height of that argument Nkosilathi took a pot and hit his sister with it on the head and face.

He went on to take a wardrobe drawer which he used to hit his sister again several times all over her body. As a result of the assault, Mejury sustained a swollen forehead, head and injuries on her back and she was referred to hospital for medical examination.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Nkosilathi’s arrest.
