Bulawayo’s most glamorous dress up event, the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA), has finally caught up with local artistes and arts fanatics, as they are set to be held on Saturday.

As they are in their third edition and due to the love and appreciation from local stakeholders and Bulawayo residents, the organisers of the RoilBAA have settled for Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Exhibition Hall 4 as the venue for the awards.

“We have received much love from local companies like our main sponsor the United Refineries’ Roil cooking oil brand, and our other pivotal partners, stakeholders, artistes themselves and finally the fans.

“They have supported RoilBAA since they were created three years ago. Therefore the success of the awards is because of the appreciation from them. This made us settle for the awards to be held at a larger venue like the ZITF Hall 4 so as to accommodate everyone,” said Raisedon Baya who is one of the masterminds of the awards.

Since their creation in 2017, as a way of celebrating local talent across all arts sectors from music, visual art, acting both on stage and television, comedy and media platforms that support Bulawayo’s own talent, the awards have been proven to be a confederacy force in Bulawayo.

As if that is enough, the RoilBAA have become a source of pride for artistes especially those whose craft is recognised by the awards.

Legendary Afro jazz musician Jeys Marabini who is nominated for Outstanding Alternative (Maskandi/Jazz) music Artiste/Act at this year’s edition revealed that the awards gives hope to most local artistes to soldier on and continue creating good music for the fans.

“It has always been said that Bulawayo artistes are not good enough when it comes to music composition. However, the RoilBAA proves that wrong as it is the main platform that  reveals the hard work of local artistes and thumbs up to the awards because they encourage artistes to work even harder to be recognised,” said Marabini.

Hwabaraty who is a favourite when it comes to RoilBAA nominations and nominated twice, in the same category with his mentor Marabini and for Outstanding Male Artiste said: “Even though I have never received any award in previous editions, the fact that I was nominated already makes me a winner because it’s a sign that my music is relevant in Bulawayo.”

Recently, the RoilBAA ship hit an iceberg when the organisers nominated Kalawa Jazmee boss Oscar Mdlongwa otherwise known as Oskido in the music circles only to embarrass the city of Kings by claiming he is not a Zimbabwean and he doesn’t qualify for the nomination.

Moreover, the artistes that he was nominated with on the Outstanding Arts Personality from Outside of Bulawayo category, Harare music giants Jah Prayzah and Winky D also caused a storm based on their nominations as the foundation of the awards was only to recognise Bulawayo artistes and their surroundings.

However, Nkululeko Nkala who is one of the awards organisers revealed that they decided to accommodate Oskido, Jah Prayzah and Winky D because their music had a great impact in Bulawayo.

“If you take a deep look, these are the people who create music that has impact in Bulawayo. When Winky D and Jah Prayzah stage a show in Bulawayo most people attend because of their relationship with the artistes’ music.

“The same can be said about Oskido who pulled out of the awards nomination, his Kalawa Homecoming attracts almost every Bulawayo citizen, and therefore this made us to create the category so as to express their musical significance in Bulawayo,” said Nkala.

Nkala further went on to reveal that the awards were already sold out with over 80 percent of the tickets having been sold. He also said fans should expect a world-class event as they have improved in terms of the stage and gallery layouts.

Meanwhile, this year’s host for the awards will be sensational beauty Samantha Tshuma, media personality Lorraine Sibanda and South African-based comedian Nceku.

Television personality Nyasha Diva, former Skyz Metro FM’s Master Eli, Khulumani FM presenter Hlengiwe Mtetwa will be the hosts on the red carpet extravaganza.

Fashion police of the day will include sharp eyed Emma Nxumalo who is the founder of Zwide Media, television personality Braydan Heart, fashion designer Saneliso Mpofu and Samantha Banda.

What should artistes and voters know in as far as the choosing of the winners in each category, is concerned?

Public voters contribute only 25 percent while the decision by judges and assessors on the panel contributes 75 percent on deciding the winner in each and every category.

“When judging and assessing the artistes, factors that includes the relevance of the artiste in that field and the efforts the artiste has made in the whole year are also taken into account, making the choice of the winner transparent and fair,” said Nkala.
