Roil BAA with a difference

The fourth edition of the glitz and glamorous Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (Roil BAA) will not be the same this year with the “black” cloud of the dreadful novel coronavirus engulfing the whole world.

With lockdown regulations banning public gatherings including the holding of shows, display of literary works and theatre productions, many creatives are failing to fend for themselves.

“In partnership with our main sponsor United Refineries and running under the Roil banner (Roil BAA) with the possibility of other players joining in this drive, we will issue subsistence vouchers and stimulus food packages to our 77 previous winners,” said BAA in a press statement.

This is the first initiative that the Roil BAA organisers are willing to work on and help artistes that are falling on hard times as a corporate responsibility for the awards and the main sponsors United Refineries.

“We will also identify further 10 vulnerable artistes who are not necessarily past award winners,” said Roil BAA.

The awards will be characterised by a lot of changes with the major one being the reduction of nomination categories from 50 which was initiated last year to 32 categories.

“As we already know, the sector has been heavily affected by Covid-19, some of the genres haven’t been very active. The awards have been reduced from the 50 we called out last year to 32 this year,” reads the Roil BAA press statement.

As they were slated for 29 August, the awards have been shifted to 28 November, a date which the gods will decide if it will be conducive for the awards to be open for everyone to physically attend (that’s if Covid-19 is over), or they will be held online.

Key issues to note about the RoilBAA 2020 edition.

From 19 to 27 August, the awards will be holding a conscious citizenship programme which is aimed at generating resources that will help in raising money as a token of appreciation to winners.

On 28 August the nominations will be open and an online concert will be broadcast to the masses followed by the closing of nominations on 18 September.

Nominated creatives will be announced on 2 October with the voting lines being opened on 9 October and closed on 20 November.

On the day before the awards which is 27 November, a dress rehearsal for the nominated artistes will be held.

Most importantly, there will be documentation of artistes that are going to benefit from the vouchers provided by the RoilBAA and the sponsors live on different social media sites and on television.
