Police arrest 11 suspected armed robbers

POLICE have arrested 11 suspected armed robbers over the theft of US$51 000 and goods worth US$80 000, in Karoi, Mashonaland West province.

Gift Asafu (29), Goodness Gandiwa (36), Kudakwashe Kapesa (24), Taurai Musindo (23), Tapera Zimbapeni (22), Onias Matangi (47), Evans Milanzi (24), Jimmy Dzokamushure (49), Addition Chagadama (22), Jeremy Nyakujara (27) and Nicholas Samuel (22) were arrested in connection with a spate of armed robbery and theft cases committed between April 2021 and September 2022 in and around Karoi.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the 11 suspects.

“On 7 September 2022, the police acted on a tip- off and tracked Gift Asafu, one of the suspects, who was linked to several cases of robbery in Karoi. Police interviewed the suspect who exposed 11 other suspects including Charles Phiri who has not been found yet,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

Asst Comm Nyathi said the suspects were also linked to nine robbery cases and unlawful entry into premises and theft.

The cases include a robbery which occurred at Energy Park Service Station, on 28 December 2021 at around 9pm in Karoi.

The suspects reportedly robbed the service station manager of US$51 000, a VW Golf vehicle at gunpoint, and another robbery case where they attacked three security guards who were on duty at Brockerly Farm in Karoi ,before stealing various agricultural inputs and 17.5 tonnes of soya
beans all valued at US$80 000.

Asst Comm Nyathi said police had since launched a manhunt for Phiri. “The police are appealing for information which can lead to the arrest of the outstanding suspect (Charles Phiri alias Chewaz). Anyone with information should report at any nearest police
