A man from Bulawayo has appeared in court facing charges of allegedly stealing 12 chickens worth US$116.
Hloniphani Mathe (26) from Matsheumhlope suburb appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Marygold Ndlovu charged with stocktheft as defined in Section 114 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody to 13 October on $2 000 bail.
It is alleged that on 13 September and at around 8pm the accused went to Sitshengisiwe Mangena (55)’s house in Riverside suburb and entered through the unlocked gate. He reportedly proceeded to the fowl run and allegedly stole 12 chickens.
His luck, however, ran out when he was spotted by Tafadzwa Mutambudzi, who is a police officer, while jumping over the precast wall.
He tried to run away but Mutambudzi managed to catch up with him. He took him to Mangena’s house where she was notified of the incident and she positively identified the chickens.
Mathe was taken to Hillside Police Station where a charge of stocktheft was filed against him. Upon his arrest chickens worth US$12 were the only ones which were recovered.
