National Foods horse racing contest

THE National Foods Gold Cup Sprint Grade Three horse race will be held next week Friday at Borrowdale Racecourse and prize money of US$3 000 will be up for grabs.

The contestants will gallop over a sprint distance of 1 200m.

To date nominees have gone through two pre-race stages as the fight for a place among the final field on the day intensifies.

Stages that have so far been successfully done are the nominations stage as well as the weight and draws stage.

All nominees are still hanging on there as they wait for the final stage which is the acceptance stage.

These troops are led by Coachella trained by Bridget Stidolph who is the highest merit rated participant at (108) coming into this competition.

His stable mate Armstrong (91) sits third on the ratings ladder. Other equines set to be unleashed by Stidolph are Love Bluff (88), Twilight Trip (87) as well as Butchie Boy (81).

Trainer Gokhan Terzi has the highest number of nominees after throwing into the hat five equines to fly the stable colours.

The second highest merit rated runner Fareeq (94) is under his tutelage accompanied by Armstrong (90), Gladstone (86), Verdier (86) as well as White Winter.

From this impressive list of nominees, the odd one out is White Winter who is a mare while the rest are geldings.

The acceptance stage is anticipated in due course paving way for the dramas as well as spills to unfold at the race course.

In addition to this event there are seven more races on the card with over 80 athletes reportedly raring to take part.
