A 36-year-old man from Nkayi was beaten to a pulp by a mob for stealing a goat from a homestead.
Zibonelo Mgayo, from Maphane Village Ward 4, under Chief Skhobokhobo was caught red-handed by Knowledge Ndlovu at Duha Village in Ward 3, under Chief Madliwa, stealing a goat.
According to a villager named Mbongeni Ncube, on Tuesday, Mgayo went to a kraal at around 6pm and stole a goat belonging to Thulisani Siziba.
Mgayo was caught by Ndlovu, who then inquired on what he was doing in the kraal. In his response, he said that he was not stealing but rather repossessing his stolen goat.
Mgayo was taking advantage of the fact that the livestock owner stays and works in another village. Ndlovu then called Nyarai Sibanda, the one responsible for taking care of the livestock, and they called other village members.
Mgayo was made to lie down on the ground and thrashed by the community members. The villagers decided to beat Mgayo instead of reporting him to police at Gwelutshena Police Station.
The community members said cases of livestock theft were on the increase, and in most cases, they decide to discipline their community members.
Melusi Ndlela said: “This is the second time a similar case is happening. When we find someone stealing in our village, we discipline them to ensure that they do not do it again.”
The village head of the area, Elkanah Khumalo was not reachable for comment.
