On 11 September, Miss and Mr Rural Zimbabwe’s return was announced successfully after taking a sabbatical of 14 years.

The founder of the pageant and models’ instructor Sipho Mazibuko said the return of the pageant was to bridge a gap between rural youths and their urban counterparts so as to afford them equal chances in life.

To cement her vision, in the finals of Miss and Mr Summer Strides (other Mazibuko’s pageants) which were held at Lavinia Gardens on 24 September, she said the search for models in rural areas had finally begun.

So far, a model from Matopo by the name of Mntwanenkosi Dube was discovered and she was unveiled as the Face of Miss Rural Zimbabwe.

“I am happy to announce that Miss Rural Zimbabwe has returned. To spice things up, we also decided to do a male contest under the name Mr Rural Zimbabwe.

“The government of Zimbabwe has played a crucial role in holding our hand and lifting us up and making it possible for the re-birth of our beautiful contests.

“This is a platform that will help rural girls and boys that are sidelined as they are not given enough chance to take centre stage and showcase their talent,” said Mazibuko at Miss and Mr Strides finals.

To mark the return of the pageant, Mazibuko who once suffered bipolar, said in the search for models in rural communities, they would be raising mental health and HIV/AIDS awareness in those communities.

To spice things up, the Deputy Minister of Health and Childcare Doctor John Mangwiro who was the guest of honour at the colourful event, said the Ministry endorses such ideas that will change the lives of many in rural areas.

“People in rural areas are always left behind. They don’t have other privileges that can easily be accessible in urban areas.

“Mental health and HIV/AIDS are real and as the Ministry, we are delighted with the efforts of Miss Rural Zimbabwe of engaging and raising awareness on such issues. This will go a long way,” said Mangwiro.

Meanwhile, Laura Nyathi, an Advanced level student was crowned Miss Summer Strides, while Prosper Msamanyada, a Highlanders FC player, was crowned Mr Summer Strides.
