Man rapes, poisons daughter

A 31-YEAR-OLD man from Singeni area in Nkayi, Matabeleland North province has appeared in court facing charges of allegedly raping his 13-year-old daughter before he attempted to commit suicide.

The man who cannot be named to protect the minor child also tried to kill his daughter by forcing her to drink a dip chemical.

He was not asked to plead to rape charges when he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga.

He was remanded in custody to 1 June and was told to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court heard that on 23 January this year the man met his daughter while she was walking home from school in a bushy area and asked her to have sex with him but she refused.

After turning down her father’s sexual demands, the girl reportedly ran home and reported him to her mother.

When the man arrived home in the evening, his wife asked him why he wanted to have sex with their daughter, and he bolted out of the bedroom while threatening to commit suicide by hanging himself.

It is reported that on an unknown date but sometime this year the man woke up at around 10pm and locked his wife in their bedroom and headed to the kitchen where his daughter was sleeping and he awakened her, the court heard.

It is said he forced her to drink water which was laced with a dip chemical.

After that, the court heard, he grabbed his daughter before fondling her breasts and allegedly had sexual intercourse with her.

After allegedly raping her, the court heard, he threatened her with death if ever she revealed the matter to anyone.

Despite the chilling threat the following day the girl gathered courage and revealed the ordeal to her mother.

The emotionally disturbed mother confronted her husband and questioned him why he had sexually attacked their daughter. The exposed man once again threatened to commit suicide.

The minor girl reportedly fell sick and was rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Upon being examined by doctors that is when it was discovered that she had been raped, the court heard.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the man.
