A MAN from Gweru allegedly axed his wife to death after he stumbled on a love message on his wife’s phone. He then hanged himself from the roof truss in the dining room shortly after.

The incident which has left residents shell shocked happened in the early hours of Monday morning in Hertfordshire suburb in Gweru.

A family member who spoke to B-Metro on condition of anonymity said Pride Hove (30) and Patience Matura (22) were officially on separation but were seeing each other.

“The two got married in 2017 but their marriage was plagued by marital problems in 2018 resulting in the two being on separation.  But later on in 2019 they started visiting each other since they have a child together,” said the family insider.

The source added “This week on Saturday as usual Pride invited Patience for a sleepover. On Sunday while they were relaxing Patience received a love message on her phone. After seeing the message Pride phoned the guy who sent the message and the guy said Patience was his girlfriend. That did not go down well with Pride who phoned his brother telling him that he wanted to kill himself. But his brother told him he was at work and there was curfew and therefore he could not immediately come over. His brother asked his neighbour to counsel the pair.”

The source said Pride refused to open the door leading the neighbour to counsel them through a window.

“The neighbour arrived at around 1pm and knocked but Pride refused to open the door and only opened the window and his neighbour talked to them through the window from 1am  to 4am. He left as the pair seemed to have forgiven each other. The pair slept. Pride woke up while his wife was deep in sleep facing downwards and axed her on the neck once and left the axe stuck. He then walked to the dining room where he hanged himself from the roof trusses with a blue rope,” said the source.

His brother, the source said, found them dead.

“When Patrick came from work he found the doors locked and when he peeped through the window in the dining room he saw Pride hanging from the roof truss. He then reported the matter at Gweru Central Police Station. Police attended the scene and took the bodies for post-mortem,” said the source.

About his burial, the source said, his relatives in Mberengwa where he grew up refused to accept his body for burial.

“Mkoma pakaoma (It’s difficult my brother), his parents died so he was raised by his uncle in Mberengwa. When we phoned them(relatives) where he grew up  they said he could  not be buried there , then his aunt said he will be buried here in Gweru and cannot  be buried  in Mutare because his paternal elatives there don’t  know him much,” said the source.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed: “I can confirm that we are handling a case of suspected murder where it is suspected that the late Pride Hove axed his wife Patience Matura to death. He then hanged himself from the roof truss with a rope.”
