A 42-YEAR-OLD man from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo who stole a bag of screws worth US$7 from the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has been fined $10 000 for the offence.

Lawrence Maphosa was convicted on his own plea to a count of theft by Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda.

Maphosa was fined $10 000 or in default two months in jail.

An additional two months imprisonment were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on 7 November 2022 and at around 10pm, Maphosa was caught by a security guard lying near a railway line.

It is reported that when the security guard called him so that he could identify himself, Maphosa tried to hide the bag which was behind him.

Realising that he was trying to hide the bag, the security guard then quickly ordered him to bring it and he complied.

When the security guard searched the bag he found 31 coach screws and five scrap plates belonging to NRZ and in the process Maphosa was subsequently arrested.
