A man dragged his niece to a bushy area, raped her and later threatened to kill her.

The rape ordeal happened yesterday at Springs Farm near Kensington plots on the outskirts of Bulawayo.

An insider said the 17-year-old victim stays with her grandmother and her younger sister while her uncle stays near their homestead.

The victim’s grandmother sent the unsuspecting minor and her younger sister to fetch firewood. While they were on the way her 27-year-old uncle pitched up and asked her to accompany him to his homestead to collect his shoes, said the insider.

While she was walking in front of him along a footpath, her uncle grabbed her by her arm before he dragged her into a bushy area and pushed her onto the ground and raped her. After the ordeal he threatened to kill her if ever she told anyone about the rape ordeal.

It is said the minor went home and told her grandmother about the rape incident. Disturbed by that, the granny took her to Hillside police station and reported the matter.

Police are yet to arrest the alleged sex offender.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident. He applauded the minor and granny for their courage in reporting such an incident saying usually when such crimes are committed by relatives they are swept under the carpet.

“We would like to applaud the granny and the minor for coming forward to report. And we would like to urge members of the public to be courageous and report such matters even if they are committed by relatives. They should report them within 72 hours so that they access post-exposure prophylaxis and be taken through counselling,” he said.
