A man from Bulawayo’s Iminyela suburb committed suicide by gulping rat poison after he discovered that he was suffering from an incurable health ailment.

A family spokesperson said Daniel Mpofu who is the uncle to the deceased said the late Hope Moyo (24)’s lifeless body was found lying on his bed on Sunday.

Mpofu said he noticed that Moyo had not woken up to go to church.

“He was a devout Christian and so as per expectation we were expecting to see him preparing to go to church early in the morning but I got worried when I noticed that it was after 11am without seeing him. I then checked him in his bedroom and got shocked to see his body lying lifeless on the bed and beside his body there was a bottle of rat poison and a cup which contained liquid rat poison to prove that he took rat poison,” said the heartbroken Mpofu.

Mpofu went on to say the late left a suicide note stating that he had to cut his life short because he was diagnosed of an incurable health ailment.

“He left a suicide note stating that he had to take his life after he  discovered that he was suffering from an incurable health ailment. He did n’t state the name of the ailment,”said Mpofu.

Mpofu described his nephew as a devout Christian.

“He was dedicated to the things of the Lord and he was part of an evangelism team at his church and he would go from one place to another preaching the good news of the Lord. And he had just finished doing his Masters Degree. He was not married and had no child,” he said.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.

“We would like to advise members of the public to seek counselling from third parties like pastors or police’s Victim Friendly Unit (VFU), or elderly people in the community than to commit suicide.”
