A man accused of spending money on alcohol thereby neglecting his family has been arrested for assaulting his wife after she asked for money for school fees for their children.
Clifford Moyo (45) from Entumbane suburb came from a booze and demanded isitshwala and while his wife Silethemba Mhlanga (34) was serving him food, she asked for money for school fees for their children.
A source who is close to the couple said Moyo who was visibly drunk unleashed a verbal tirade at his wife.
His wife reportedly hit back: “You spent the whole salary on alcohol now our children are a laughing stock in the community because they fail to go to school since their fees have not been paid and they do n’t have uniforms.”
It seems his wife’s response stoked fires because in a fit of anger Moyo charged at his wife and rained blows on her, said an insider.
He did not stop at that as he reached for a rope and thrashed her all over the body. She cried for help prompting a neighbour to come to her rescue.
Mhlanga reported the matter at Entumbane police station leading to the arrest of her husband.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga confirmed the incident.
“We would like to urge members of the community to seek advice from third parties like pastors, police’s Victim Friendly Unit (VFU) or elderly people in the community than to resort to violence” said Asst Insp Msebele.
Mhlanga said: “We have three school going children and shockingly when I asked for money for school fees and uniforms he fumed at me before he assaulted me with fists and a rope. He has since apologised and begged me to withdraw the case.”
Efforts to get a comment from Moyo were fruitless as his mobile number went straight to voicemail.
