“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you,” reads John 14:18.

Bulawayo cleric Madzibaba Emmanuel Mutumwa, popularly known as Signature, who leads apostolic sect, Johane Masowe weChishanu stationed at Selbourne Park, Bulawayo has applied for land to erect a community centre that will house orphans and the less privileged in Bulawayo.

The prophet, well-known in the city for exorcising demons throughout the country through famous marathon services dubbed “Hoko yechiwororo/Go back to sender”, where a number of people who worship at his church are basking in the glory of testimonies, said they will also pay school fees for the orphans and the less privileged.

Speaking at the crossover service held at their Cecil Drive shrine on New Year’s Eve that was attended by Bulawayo Mayor Solomon Mguni and some councillors, Mutumwa said constructing the centre is part of his congregation’s social responsibility work.

“We want to help the orphans and the less privileged and live true to the word of God. Johane Masowe weChishanu Selbourne Park will fund the whole process of acquiring land and construction of the centre which we plan to house at least 1 000 kids. These youngsters on the streets and those who are less privileged deserve to be loved and well taken care of. The church has a role in providing guidance and love to those who are underprivileged.

“We are happy that the mayor and the councillors have seen what we are doing and have promised to assist us because they see the value that the centre will give to Bulawayo. Our hope is that once given the green light, construction will immediately start. Our target is to start construction in February,” said Mutumwa.

The cleric who “exhibited” his powers when he exorcised demons and prophesied to congregants before Mayor Mguni left to visit other churches that were also holding crossover services, saw his New Year’s Eve service drawing thousands, with some saying they travelled from the UK, South Africa, Botswana and Dubai to be “blessed” by Mutumwa.

The Mutumwa-led Johane Masowe weChishanu sect has branches in Binga, Lupane, Maphisa, Mberengwa, and Beitbridge.

Mayor Mguni said: “As the year comes to an end, we give our hope to Jesus Christ. As Bulawayo City Council, we know that the church plays a big role in our city and everything is good when we turn to God. We ask the church to seek divine intervention and pray for the rains that the city needs.
