A police officer stationed at the Bulawayo Central Police Station was allegedly attacked by a four-member gang which he had arrested for allegedly flouting coronavirus-induced night curfew.

This came to light when Blessing Muvazhi (30) and Lovemore Zvikonyo (25) from Buena Vista suburb appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate Amanda Ndlovu charged with a crime of assaulting a police officer as defined in Section 179 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

The duo was not asked to plead and were remanded out of custody to November 11 on $6 000 bail each.

Allegations are that on 31 October 2021 and around 2am Newman Hlatshwayo was on duty at African Life Building also known as Southampton Building which is situated at corner 9th Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street when he heard a car alarm sound outside.

When he went out of the building to check what was happening, he reportedly saw Muvazhi walking towards Bulawayo Centre and he stopped her.

After stopping her, he introduced himself as a police officer and asked her where she was going during curfew hours.

Muvazhi reportedly turned aggressive and started arguing with him. She later called Zvikonyo and their two other accomplices who are still at large and started assaulting Hlatshwayo with fists all over the body.

After attacking him they ran away and investigations by the police later led to the arrest of Muvazhi and Zvikonyo and their subsequent appearance in court.
