A 66-year-old woman was left counting her losses after detectives caught her with more than 2kg of mbanje and arrested her.
Mirriam Sibanda (66) of Burombo Flats in Nguboyenja suburb was arrested on Monday shortly after 4 pm while she was receiving her consignment of 2,043 kg of mbanje from a bus conductor of a bus company, which picks and drops its passengers opposite Bulawayo Central Police Station.
“Police received a tip-off from a passenger that Sibanda had received a 2,043 kg of mbanje from her relative who is based in South Africa. After that detective swooped in and arrested her. They took her to Bulawayo Central police station leading to her arrest,” said a source.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.
“We are worried by criminals who use Bulawayo as a transit point for any illegal items or goods. We would like to appreciate members of the public who supply police with information leading to exposing such criminal activities,” said Insp Ncube.
