WARRIORS coach Norman Mapeza has given up on coaxing star player Khama Billiat to come out of retirement after he named a 23-member squad on Wednesday without the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder.

The squad departs this afternoon and will have a five-day training camp in the Cameroon capital, Yaoundé.

Several key players are also missing due to injuries.

Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, Leicester City’s Tawanda Maswanhise, Reims midfielder Marshal Munetsi and Wigan Athletic’s Tendayi Darikwa will miss the January 9 to February 6 tournament through injury.

Billiat announced last month he had retired from international football.

Warriors general manager Wellington Mpandare is on recording saying efforts to coax the player out of retirement were being made.

But for the first in as many years, the Warriors will be without one of their best performers in senior national team colours.

As expected, captain Knowledge Musona will lead the team that also includes Lyon forward Tinotenda Kadewere and defender Teenage Hadebe, who plays in Major League Soccer with Houston Dynamo FC.

The Warriors open their Group B campaign against Senegal on January 10 and will also face Malawi and Guinea.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Petros Mhari (FC Platinum), Martin Mapisa (FC Zamora), Talbert Shumba (Free State Stars)

Defenders: Peter Muduwa (Highlanders), Alec Mudimu (Torpedo Kutaisi), Takudzwa Chimwemwe (Nkana), Jordan Zemura (Bournemouth), Godknows Muriwa (Dynamos), Gerald Takwara (Venda Football Academy), Teenage Hadebe (Houston Dynamo), Bruce Kangwa (Azam), Onismor Bhasera (SuperSport United)
