FORMER Chicken Inn, How Mine and Highlanders gaffer Philani Mabhena has assumed the role of assistant coach at former Premier Soccer League outfit Zimbabwe Saints.
Mabhena will be assistant coach to Amini Soma Phiri at the ex-Zimbabwe champions that will be part of the Zifa Southern Region Division One League.
“Yes, it’s true that coach Philani Mabhena has joined Zimbabwe Saints as Amini Soma Phiri’s assistant. He joined us late last week,” said Chauya Chikwata chairman Felix Dzumbunu.
Relegated from PSL football on 9 November 2011 hardly 12 months after a return from Division One, Chikwata, “marked the end of an era”.
After decades of in-house squabbles, relegation on numerous occasions, that year’s collapse seemed to be the final straw for men and women who had gallantly held on.
The royalty of Bulawayo and the southern part of the country had among itself an imprint of Chauya Chikwata.
At some stage in the late 1970s with Highlanders languishing in the unfashionable murky waters of lower division, Zimbabwe Saints was reportedly the flag bearer of the city in national football circles of Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Masvingo and the Midlands.
