A 43-year-old man threatened to kill a minor saying her mother owed him money for rent and thereafter dragged her into his bedroom and allegedly raped her.
Police have launched a manhunt for the sex offender who is on the run.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that a 43- year – old man raped an 11-year-old teenage girl that he was left with when the mother of the child went to town to buy groceries,” she said.
She advised rape victims to report such cases within 72 hours so that they could get medical attention.
“We would like to advise members of the community to report such cases within 72 hours so that they get post-exposure prophylaxis at the hospital,” she said.
A family insider said last week on Friday the mother of the child left her child in the care of her landlord to buy groceries in town.
“The man complained to the minor saying they were staying for free as if it was a social welfare centre since her mother owed him a lot of money for rent. In the midst of that he grabbed the minor and dragged her into his bedroom and stripped her naked before sexually assaulting her,” said the source close to investigations.
After the rape ordeal the landlord threatened to kill the minor if she revealed the sexual assault incident to anyone.
The minor kept the incident to herself for two days and spilled the beans to her aunt who had visited them.
“The aunt informed the mother of the child and after that they reported the matter to the police,” said the source.
