T.I. HAS claimed he was joking about taking his 18-year-old daughter, Deyjah Imani Harris, to the gynaecologist to check her hymen.
The Atlanta rapper came in for huge criticism when he made the highly controversial statement about making Deyjah have yearly virginity tests, earlier this month.
But today he massively backtracked and said he had exaggerated the story for comic effect.
He told Jada Pinkett Smith on the latest episode of Red Table Talk: “First of all, I came to clear up any misconceptions there have been surrounding how we parent and what is appropriate and inappropriate.”
He continued: “‘I think all of this comes from a conversation I was having in a very joking manner when asked how I deal with parenting in this day and age.”
“‘From a place of truth, I began to embellish and exaggerate and I think a lot of people took it extremely literal because if you put any of my reputation, who I am as a father, who I’ve been, I honestly thought people knew me better than that.”
He also explained that his daughter didn’t have any objections to him being with them at the doctor’s office, but that she did have an issue with him admitting that it had happened.
He said: “I am incredibly apologetic to her for that. Not to any of these other strangers, or any other weirdos who just tossed lies around for fun.”
The 39-year-old rapper told Jada that he was now opening up about the situation because Deyjah herself told him to let it go, but as things kept escalating, she then told him to clarify the situation.
He then asked the three women present at the Red Table what his purpose as a father these days was meant to be since he was getting so much backlash for worrying about his daughter’s sexual health.
Adrienne Banfield-Jones, Jada’s mum and co-host of the show, responded by saying that he received so much backlash because he had talked about something that’s so personal to every woman, especially at Deyjah’s age, and not because he wanted to protect her.
He continued explaining his motives and said: “In the age and the time, our women, black women, are the most unprotected, unattended, disregarded women of the planet.”
“I’m being criticised because I’m willing to go above and beyond to protect mine and I’m talking about all the little slimy, grimey, chubby-fingers little boys who want to just come and defile and destroy the sanctity that I have . . . “
He explained that he will always protect and guide his children until he feels like they have enough awareness to make the right choices.
Jada jumped in and clarified to the viewers that he thought 15-year-old Deyjah may not have had the understanding of what it meant to have sex at such a young age.
He agreed and said now she that she’s 18, he has no control over her life.
T.I. was criticised by many earlier this month.
