A 96-year-old woman who was involved in a heated argument with his grandson is battling for her life at Mpilo Central Hospital after her grandson punched her before axing her on the back of the head.

The incident was reported to the police and Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed it.
He discouraged community members from taking the law into their hands.

“We would like to strongly discourage community members from taking the law into their hands because that might lead to unnecessary loss of life. We would like to advise community members to engage third parties like pastors, relatives, elders or police so as to solve the dispute amicably,” he said.

A source close to the incident said Hloniphani Ncube (32) came home late from a night out and his granny Assa Bhebhe fumed at him and told him she was not happy about his wayward actions. The source said that did not go down well with Ncube who grabbed his aged and frail granny before punching her.

“He punched her in the face before he reached for an axe and attacked her on the back of the head leaving her lying on the floor and bleeding,” said the source.

A neighbour who heard screams dashed to the scene and called an ambulance which swiftly arrived and ferried her to hospital. She is fighting for her life in intensive care.
The incident was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Ncube.
