“Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me,” so reads Psalm 23 verse 4.
The Lord’s word of hope and comfort is a testament and fulfillment to multi-lingual Gospel sensation Everton Mlalazi’s life, who has fulfilled his dreams of being among the outstanding musicians to emerge from Matabeleland.
Born at Mathe area in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North, Mlalazi has defied all odds by chasing his dreams to the extent of rubbing shoulders and collaborating with Grammy award winning creatives Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
On his latest project, Mlalazi worked closely with the all male Acapella/Imbube outfit who boast of five Grammy awards, on a song titled Nomakunje.
“The song is a traditional chorus that I grew up singing. Derrick Nzimande also sang the song in the late 80s. I took it upon myself to rendition the song and give it a new feel by adding new lyrics with the help of Nigel Nyangombe.
“I wanted the song to maintain its traditional feel and Lady Smith Black Mambazo were the first guys to come into my mind as I trusted they will do justice to my vision.
“In the process of planning around the creation of the song, Psalms 23 became the corner stone and the theme of the project because of obstacles that I experienced as a person, going through hard times, then God showing up and giving me a new slate in life.
“Basically, the song is meant to give courage and hope to people that the storms they are going through will pass. Even though they harm us on the way, even though they throw thorns at us, we shall succeed. Move forward, don’t lose power, don’t lose focus, forward ever, and no turning back,” said Mlalazi.
