English football comes to local TV

FOOTBALL lovers are in for a treat with the screening of the Premier League, arguably the most watched league in the world, set to hit local screens starting this weekend.

ZBC TV will screen one match every weekend with the first game being a clash between Tottenham and Southampton this Saturday.

The Premier League boasts of an audience of three billion plus viewers for all matches in as many countries over the course of a season.

Games between arch rivals that include Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City among other teams generate fierce debate among local football supporters, days before the matches are played.

Bars and weekend hangout joints are filled to the brim when the most popular Premier League teams meet.

The broadcasting of international football on ZBC TV at the expense of local football has, however, divided soccer fans.

Some feel Zimbabweans have always watched international football without ZBC TV; thus the channel must prioritise local games.

“You want to broadcast matches being played thousands of miles away from home yet you can’t broadcast our own local matches. Whose interests are you serving,” asked one social media user.
