It was in 2018 when the 22-year-old rapper lost his provider-aunt in a tragic accident, his music career was not promising, and that could have been his breaking point but he kept a cool head and sailed through the raging tempest.

This is the tale of the up-and-coming underground rapper, Mbonge “Emmkae Madking” Mthimkhulu.

“The friends I had were just a bunch of fake people and I was facing a lot of problems that I couldn’t bear any more. I then took music as therapy and decided to put all my anger and frustrations on paper and it turned out to be lyrics to my songs,” said Emmkae.

Shoving all the bad vibes behind him, the rapper came with the song New day which is a dream of brighter days ahead.

Underground singer Emmkae says it’s his time to blow.

He is not just any underground rapper, he cuts across Kasi rap, old school hip-hop, trap and new school rap.

His witness is his new mix-tape titled Stories I Tell (S.I.T).

The nascent star who has been making waves in Botswana where he is studying Law has an album which has been baking for over a year now.

“When I wrote the song, Let it shine, which is part of my big album project titled, This little light of mine, I was thinking to myself, why am I still underground with the amount of work I have been putting in.

“So, as it begins it goes, I have been laying low, now it’s time I blow. I’m cooking something raw, I came to steal the show,” said Emmkae.

Born and raised in a Christian family, singing is in Emmkae’s genes as both his parents sang in the church choir.

“My parents were both singers, music has always been part of my life. I started rapping at the age of 12 although it was not anything serious people would always pass comments like, ‘you are a good rapper’ and that kept me going,” he said.

The mix-tape ranges from sad emotional tracks to inspirational and motivational tracks with different messages.

Emmkae reveals the story behind the mix-tape.

Man of the year — Had to carry some message or sense of motivation and that became believing in myself, that is why I chose the title.

Pusha panda — This is a motivational song that talks about the beauty in the struggle of every hood, even though things are hard where we come from, we will still dance and embrace the hardships as Kasi people because we know we have to celebrate today since we have no promise of tomorrow.

Newsflash featuring Emma-Newtone  — A new school rap song inspired by today’s generation of hip-hop. This track is all about flexing and basically talks about the drip and swag.

New day — This is a hip-hop motivational song. It is a storytelling track that is based on what has been happening in my life. I wrote this track during one of my darkest days of life.

Pretty girl — This is an international collaboration, featuring a Botswana producer and vocalist Ricky, this one goes out to all the beautiful ladies out there. It’s a RnB/hip-hop love song.
