SIXTEEEN teams are set to battle it out in the inaugural Ekasi Lounge-bankrolled mid-season inter-district pool tournament that will be played on Saturday and Sunday in the high-density suburb of Mzilikazi.
According to tournament co-ordinator Osbrnewells Dziko, the contest will pit top five teams from Bulawayo Pool Association’s (BPA) Mzilikazi District , top five teams from the central business district (CBD), bottom four from the BPA Premier League and two guest teams.
In that regard, this is a contest that will see hosts Ekasi Lounge, Nkulumane, Pumula South, Southwold, Mantshalini, Expandables, Exchange, Legacy, Zimra, Ntabazinduna, UBH, Endaweni, Edgars and Ace seek to outdo each other.
Winners will go home with $600. Clubs that will come out as first and second runners-up will pocket $400 and $200 respectively.
The fourth-placed club will receive $100 as their prize money in a competition where registration is pegged at $50 for each club.
Ekasi Lounge proprietor Nqobizitha Moyo said: “We are new into the liquor business and after our patrons asked us to sponsor a tournament of this magnitude; we saw it fit to give back to the community. We also want to give a helping hand in the development of the game of pool. If the pending contest comes out as a success, we will not hesitate to bankroll more tournaments across the city.”
Dziko reckoned this was an event which gives a chance to up-and-coming professional pool players to rub shoulders with already established masters of the billiards.
“It’s a competition that seeks to ingrate new clubs with the competitive ones that play in the elite league. It’s also aimed at giving budding professional pool players a chance to take on already established players in a very competitive environment,” said Dziko.
