A 20-year-old-man from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb was arrested for allegedly raping a juvenile aged 17 from the same suburb.
The incident occurred on 20 June around 6pm.
On the fateful day, the victim went to meet her boyfriend at Sign Post Cowdray Park but failed to locate him.
She then met Perfect Tshuma who said that he knew the victim’s boyfriend and offered to accompany her back home since it was dark.
When they approached a bushy area, Tshuma dragged the victim a few metres away from the footpath and raped her once.
After raping her, he apologised and they continued with their journey.
Upon approaching the victim’s home, she grabbed the accused by the belt and screamed for help.
The victim’s father heard the screams and rushed to her rescue.
He managed to apprehend the accused person.
A report was made and the accused was arrested.
Police attended the scene where the victim was raped and found struggle marks that indicated that there was no consent.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and urged members of the public to avoid using secluded footpaths especially during late hours to ensure their safety.
He also warned them not to trust anyone as some of the rape cases are perpetrated by the people they trust.
