Six illegal gold miners who were panning for gold in Bulawayo’s Killarney suburb have been arrested.
The six, Tatenda Sibanda (27), Mandlenkosi Ndlovu (28), Mkhokheli Ndlovu (24), Prince Dube (28), Njabulo Moyo (59) and Amos Nyirongo (25) were all arrested on 21 June after police ambushed the area.
They are from Mahatshula South, Mahatshula North, Killarney and Killarney Squatter camp.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and urged members of the public to desist from illegal mining as it endangers lives and destroys the environment.
It is said that on the day around 5pm, police received information from the residents to the effect that illegal gold panners were prospecting for gold in Killarney.
The illegal panners were also reportedly involved in other criminal activities around the area.
Thirty minutes later, police acted on the supplied information by laying an ambush at the supplied address.
More than 15 panners ran for cover in different directions.
Police operatives pursued them and arrested six of them.
