COMMENT: Report criminals among us

REPORTS of an increase in cases of robbery in the city are quite worrying, especially robbers that use vehicles and leave their victims stranded after snatching their valuables.

There is a growing trend of these drive-by robberies and the use of unregistered vehicles for such. Where the vehicles are registered, the registration plate is sometimes covered by the robbers to make it difficult to catch them.

It would appear handbags and cellphones are top of the list in terms of items that these robbers target and women are their preferred victims. We would like to urge the community to be on the lookout for such robbers and other criminals and report these to the police. We are sure that someone somewhere knows about these robbers and where they reside, and that that information could help lead to their arrest and ensure peace and security for residents in the affected areas.

It is in this light that we appeal to the public to work with the police in helping bring thieves and robbers to book. If you decide not to report crime remember that one day it would be you at the receiving end, and you would wish you reported the case so that you reduce the number of criminals roaming our streets.

We also urge shoppers to be on the lookout when they leave shops as many thieves loiter around shops, and the designation of foreign currency tills at some shops makes it easier for criminals to spot those that are likely to be carrying foreign currency.

This calls for total alertness and not trusting any stranger, and the situation is made worse by the use of masks that makes it difficult to identify some of these people. Police can only do so much hence our plea to help them apprehend criminals by even anonymously giving information so that we rid our communities of crime.

Elsewhere in this edition we carry an article on a spate of Honda Fit drive-by robberies in the city and a silver grey vehicle keeps being mentioned. Let us use even our social media constructively by sharing information about such criminal acts and security tips so that we build safe communities.
