DESPITE watching his Chicken Inn charges edge relegation-threatened Whawha 1-0 last Saturday at Luveve Stadium, with six games to play before the end of the season, Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas conceded that they will have to settle to be the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League bridesmaids.

This comes in the backdrop of that when the Gamecocks looked well on course to clinch the 2021-2022 league championship Simbisa Brands managing director Warren Meares told this publication in May that if the team happens to win the title, they were set to share a maximum of US$150 000.

“I recently talked to coach Antipas and the team and confirmed to them that if they do happen to win the championship, there will be an incentive for them that will be shared by the players and the management. The figure stands between US$130 000 and US$150 000.

“We are happy to be founders and sponsors of this great club. So far, they have been performing exceptionally well and Antipas has assured us that he will be working on some technical areas so as to continue doing well. We are looking forward to seeing our club bring the trophy back home,” we quoted Meares as saying.

Club president Lifa Ncube also confirmed that the Gamecocks could be singing on top of their voices come season end if they take number one in this contest.

However, Gamecocks’ campaign came off the rails and surrendered their impressive lead to three-time champions FC Platinum who are cruising for a fourth straight league title.

With Antipas’ men 10 points behind Pure Platinum Play, the former national team gaffer conceded: “We just have to fight for a second-place finish because first place is out of reach . . .”

Indeed, it is a jackpot chance that has gone sour!

A point separates Chicken Inn and third-placed Dynamos while the gap between fourth-placed Highlanders and Chicken Inn is six points.
