A man from Bulawayo lost his car to a suspected carjacker who hired him under the pretext that he wanted him to tow his vehicle which had a breakdown in Killarney suburb.

It is reported that on 26 July 2022 at around 4 pm, the victim was sitting in his car, a blue Honda Fit, in the city centre when he was approached by an unknown man.

The suspect lied to the victim that he was looking for someone to tow his car which had a breakdown in Killarney.

The victim agreed and charged the suspect $20 and he agreed.

The victim was led to a secluded place in Killarney suburb, where the suspect later forced him to stop the vehicle before he produced a kitchen knife from his bag and demanded money.

The victim gave him US$30 before he was ordered to leave keys on the ignition and to immediately go out of the vehicle and he complied.

The suspect then jumped onto the driver’s seat and immediately sped off from the scene.

The value of the stolen property is US$5 000.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and appealed to the public to help recover the stolen car.

“Police would like to appeal to members of the public with information which can lead to the arrest of the accused and recovery of the car to report to the nearest police station.

“We are urging motorists to be very careful with strangers who approach them purporting to be genuine assistance seekers as these might be potential criminals,” said Inspector Ncube.
