LIVING in a Covid-19 era may as well be the new way of life for the near future hence the sporting fraternity needs to find solutions to prevent the collapse of the sports industry, a Sports Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe (SLIZ) official has said.

This year’s edition of the SLIZ summer camp in Nyanga will bring together 300 delegates drawn from across the country to find solutions for the survival of the sports industry in a Covid-19 era.

SLIZ president Russell Maradza Mhiribidi explained that the sports industry was caught unawares by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent bans on sporting activities thus it is imperative for the sector to move forward stronger.

“No industry can survive two years of inactivity as what happened to most industries, including sports, since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are saying it’s time for sports administrators, coaches and athletes to find ways to keep the sports fraternity afloat going into the future.

“Everyone was caught unawares by the pandemic but what is important is for sports leaders to rejuvenate the industry, to stay prepared and plan for the future because the reality is that coronavirus might be with us for years to come.

“Some athletes lost their careers as a result of the pandemic and we cannot allow such to happen again simply because we are not prepared to deal with the future in the Covid-19 era,” said Mhiribidi.

The camp will be held in line with Covid-19 protocols and only fully vaccinated delegates will be in attendance.

“The Nyanga event is a camp so all our activities will be held outdoors and we have made sure that Covid-19 protocols are followed to the tee,” he said.

SLIZ, which prides itself as a ‘game changer’ in the country’s sports industry has in the past organised similar camps that bring together leaders such as administrators, school heads, sports directors and teachers to keep them abreast with global sports management trends.
