Byo Christian League teams for Bots

.
FORMER Highlanders player and manager Lawrence Phiri in partnership with Cosmas a?Tsanoa? Zulu have organised a soccer and netball tournament that will have teams from the Bulawayo Christian League doing battle against counterparts from the Botswana Church Sports Association League.

Phiri, better known as Lofty, is the founder member of the Botswana Church Sports Association League.

Speaking at the Bulawayo Christian League awards ceremony last Saturday, Phiri said he wanted to extend an invitation to the Bulawayo Christian League leadership to come and play with them.

a?I want you to go and see what the teams in Botswana are doing. We should also give them a chance to come to Zimbabwe and see what you guys are doing both in the football and netball leagues,a? said Phiri who has been staying in the neighbouring Botswana for the past 24 years.

a?I have been in Botswana for some time and during my stay there, 24 teams joined the Botswana Church Sports Association League which is made up of eight sporting disciplines. They play soccer, netball, basketball, tennis, handball, volleyball, table tennis and pool. Sports is enjoyed by a lot of youths and gets them together, that is why we even left the chairmanship of the Inter Church Sports League to the youth, so that they lead themselves as they know what they expect from the league more than us the elderly,a? he said.

Phiri also urged churches that participate in the Christian League to encourage other congregants to fully engage in sports.

a?It will be a pleasure to see the number of teams increasing both in netball and football league. You need to go out there and encourage your fellow congregants to consider fully participating in sporting activities,a? he said.
