Local teams came out tops at the annual National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) Beach Volleyball Competitions held at Dewure High School in Masvingo on 28 September.
Luveve High School’s Proud Nyoni and Kudzai Mazviro scooped gold in the Under-17 boys’ category while Mpopoma High School’s Jennifer Tembo and Rachel Mubvurunge also claimed gold in the Under-19 girls’ category.
The 7th annual edition of the tournament had 80 teams drawn from the country’s 10 provinces which took part in the competition.
The festivity had Under-17 and Under-19 male and female athletes battling it out for the top spot in their representative categories.
Luveve High’s U-17 boys claimed their victory over a two nil score against Marinda High School of Masvingo Province, while the Mpopoma High School girls got the better of Mnene High School of Midlands province beating them 2-0.
Bulawayo Volleyball Association (BVA) chairperson William Mazviro said it was a Bulawayo day as the City of Kings’ representatives shone in the competition.
“Bulawayo has never reached that stage before in this competition and as BVA we are very honoured and impressed that finally our investment in beach volleyball has given us a yield as evidenced by Bulawayo’s triumph.
“All these players took part in our pre-season beach volleyball tournament which was held at Busters Sports Club last month.
“We hope these young budding stars will build on as the sport can take the province steps higher and far, even on the global map,” said Mazviro.
Nash had its first beach volleyball competitions in 2012 and they have run annually since then.
