THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) is preparing for the first event of the year to be held in the city on  15 January.

The provincial cross-country meet will take place at its traditional venue, the Mpopoma Park.

The fast-paced event will be used to select a provincial team for the Inter-Provincial Cross-country set for Kadoma next month.

Bab chairman Watson Madanyika is expecting more than 100 athletes, drawn from clubs and schools, within the province.

“The preparations are at an advanced stage. We have been given the green light to use Mpopoma Park by the City Council for our cross-country event.

“We are hosting the Cross-country Selection event at White City with the idea of coming up with a good team for the province.

“The outstanding athletes stand a chance of representing Harare at the inter-pros in Redcliff.

Entry fees are pegged at US$1/ 110 rtgs per athlete (Cadets and Juniors), US $2/ 220 rtgs per athlete (Seniors).
With many events lined up, this could be the opportune time for athletes to start preparing for the various upcoming local and international competitions.

He said the province will have their second event the national track and field championships event at White City Stadium where athletes will compete in 100m, 200m,400m, 1500m, 3000m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m, triple jump, long jump, high jump, short put, discus, hammer and javelin.
