B-METRO COMMENT: Stop using WhatsApp as a cheating tool

CHEATING is almost as old as time, that’s a fact but we cannot run away from the reality that the mobile application called WhatsApp has made it easy to cheat.

As a result many a marriage which could have lasted a lifetime has ended because of a text, image or video that proved beyond doubt that one was involved in an adulterous affair.

Our lead story about a couple who have gone separate ways after the husband read a conversation between his wife and her boyfriend is just a tip of the iceberg. Many people are cheating on their partners and WhatsApp has made their mischief effortless.

Now one can be chatting with their side partner while having dinner with their spouse, some even have the audacity to sext while their better half is asleep by their side, exhausted and drained after consummating.

Before the invention of WhatsApp, lovers communicated by writing letters, in which they would proclaim their love. In case you missed your lover, the only option was to re-read the letters and hope that the postman would knock on your door as soon as possible.

This made cheating a job in itself but the convenience of WhatsApp has made cheating a walk in the park.

Now no one sweats and as a result adultery has become an avenue to distress in a marriage on the rocks. Gone are the days when one goes to elders and aunts to seek help to save a dying marriage. Now people turn to former lovers by just typing “hi” and the next morning an affair blossoms.

It is no wonder that in this post-internet era, WhatsApp has created confusion, fights and chaos between lovers, instead of bringing them together even when there is no actual cheating taking place.

WhatsApp has provided easy access for a jealous or suspicious spouse to seek out information about the interactions of a significant other. Whether suspicions are founded or unfounded, people often feel uneasy about their marriage after discovering something on their partner’s WhatsApp messenger.

This often leads to increased monitoring, jealousy, and conflict in a marriage. In fact, researchers have found that the more a person examines their partner’s WhatsApp activity, the more that person reports jealousy and mistrust.

Unfortunately, suspicions about a partner’s WhatsApp interactions are often warranted. Many people who use WhatsApp hide and delete messages from their partners.

These secret conversations are the foundation for adultery. It is not wonder that many divorces these days are triggered by WhatsApp messages that fall into the hands of a jilted lover.

We urge married couples and those in serious relationships to consider adopting such guidelines in order to save their marriages. Granted, marriages have different rules, if you respect each other’s privacy don’t use that respect as an excuse to cheat.

Respect your better half and don’t take advantage because they trust you enough not to snoop in your phone.
