B-Metro Comment: Greed a threat to Church

In our previous edition we carried the story of Elliot Moyo, the guy who was reported to have risen from the dead, and who we now know to be Thabiso Proud Mlanje of Lupane in Matabeleland North.

There have been various discussions and even theories around the story of the man who “defied” death once and rose from a coffin.

However, the underlying issue that is quite difficult to dismiss is the desperation of some of our people, especially those in foreign lands.

Some of the foreigners are prepared to do anything for money, as we saw in the case of “Elliot”. What becomes more worrying is the use of the name of God to dupe unsuspecting people, the desperate, that need comfort.

We particularly are worried by the conduct of men of the cloth that have turned the House of God into an industry where they dole out all manner of miracles that are even exported into the region.

The use of untraceable individuals, preferably foreigners, seems to be one of the ways that the so-called prophets are using to pull wool over their followers’ eyes. Blind faith is dangerous.  Even more dangerous is following people whose background one has no information about.

We will not particularise the universal, since the shenanigans across our borders also obtain here, and they are not limited to foreigners.

What we are against and wish to warn the public against is the emerging rabid cultism couched in the miracles gospel.

The gospel of old has not changed as the Bible has not been amended, and may those that claim to be Christians please refer to the Bible for guidance.

While on the resurrection of “Elliot” his “relatives” made all sorts of claims and also confirmed his death, his true relatives have expressed surprise at all the claims since the news of the death and resurrection of Elliot only got to them after his death in Zimbabwe with some having seen the drama unfold on social media.

Religion has always been practised freely in the region and we wish this could continue but the church has to rise up and ensure that it maintains certain standards so that it does not invite the intervention of governments to protect the people.

How many people have been hoodwinked through fake miracles and given away their life’s savings?  How many more must die at the hands of the fake prophets before a voice rises and puts a stop to the abomination?

The love of money is the root of all evil. Greed shall consume this generation if it does not deal with this cancer of pulpits corruption.
