B-METRO COMMENT: Bogus healers destroying families, communities

The spiritual realm is quite fascinating due to its daily impact on the living.

Different individuals may have different beliefs but there is no denying that they somehow believe in some higher power, some superior spiritual being that supersedes other spiritual beings. When such beliefs, regardless of which religion they may be ascribed to, are in conformity with societal norms, they rarely raise any eyebrows. However, when such spiritual visitations into the land of us mere mortals marshal us into going against the grain, society is bound to question, if not reject outright such beliefs or spiritual guides.

Elsewhere in this edition we carry an article of daughters that have turned against their mother after they were advised by a prophet that their mother was bewitching them. So bad are the relations between the daughters and their mother that they blame all their misfortunes on her, and are even demanding that she leaves her home. In this case, it would seem the sisters have not questioned the prophet’s prophecy but they are convinced that he is right about their mother being a witch. All this because they believe that there is a higher being that is speaking through the prophet, and that this higher being cannot be wrong since they know all. We are not sure which religion the prophet is from but the country has had its fair share of prophets that claim to be Christian. Our advice to people that find themselves in the situation that these daughters find themselves in is that they should test the spirits, check the scriptures and see if what the prophet claims is in line with what the Christian Bible advises. We say this because the Bible commands children to honour their parents so that they may have long and fruitful lives. Accusing one’s parent of witchcraft cannot be honouring them. Also, God’s prophecy is given to strengthen the believer spiritually or the church, not to divide and bring strife.

As if this was not enough, we have yet another article in which a son confessed to sleeping with his mother every month in order to boost the family business. Also, it would seem the son and the mother felt helpless after the woman’s husband sought the help of a traditional healer to boost his business before he died a few years ago. It would seem the man had a covenant with some spiritual forces to do their bidding while they also “bless” his business. The defence of the mother and son relationship appears to be the fear of losing their businesses. We have no way of knowing if indeed the healer really plays any part in the growth of the business since the family has not dared to go against his instructions.  It is possible that something bad could happen to them if they do not play ball, but also possible that the healer has just found a way to control and enslave them, when he plays no part in their business fortunes.

We believe such healers should also be punished since they spread fear and lead people into doing what is morally unacceptable. Even after the legal processes are complete and these people are punished, the fear of the healers will remain and there is no guarantee that the same problems that bedevilled them before a ruling would not recur later.
