THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) is wasting no time and has shifted into high gear to hold a seamless National Championships in Bulawayo after athletics was given the greenlight by the Sports and Recreation Commission to start training and competitions.

The National Championships will be held at White City stadium on 29 November.

Athletics is part of the 22 sporting codes whose national associations have been given the greenlight by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) to start training and competitions in the Covid-19 pandemic era.

Sports and recreational activities have been on ice since the outbreak of coronavirus in the country and the subsequent lockdown to slow the spread of the disease in March.

“We had our third quarter meeting of the year about two weeks ago where we stressed on the importance of staying ready to jump into action whenever given the greenlight to start athletics training and competitions by the relevant authorities.

“Now that the SRC has said we can resume athletics; we are wasting no time in preparing for the National Championships in Bulawayo and the organising committee led by the chairman Fanuel Mpofu is already hard at work.

“We have always stressed that we don’t want to lose the 2020 athletics calendar and the announcement by SRC comes at the right time for preparations for the national championships to begin in earnest,” said NAAZ president Tendai Tagara.

This year’s national championships will be slightly different in that some events such as field competitions will not be held, according to the athletics boss.

“Athletes competing in field events will have to sanitise their hands and equipment very often and the global norm is that such events are still not allowed so we are just following trends as they are happening around the world,” explained Tagara.

As part of efforts to hold a safe event for athletes and officials, the White City Stadium will be fumigated before the national championships.

Fumigation is the process of disinfecting or purifying an area such as White City Stadium with the fumes of chemicals to eradicate the virus that causes Covid-19.
