Bulawayo Hip Hop sensation Asaph, who was crowned the best rapper in the city at the recently held Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA), is grateful for finally winning the Cal Vin Mgcini Nhliziyo Hip Hop Award.
After the Hip Hop king Cal Vin passed away after he was involved in a hit and run accident late October, the RoilBAA organisers decided to honour his legacy by officially naming the Outstanding Hip Hop Artiste accolade after him.
Since the awards were introduced in the city, Cal Vin had won the award three times in a row, with Asaph being the first artiste to win the accolade after Cal Vin, a personality he was in heavy competition with on the Hip Hop scene.
Asaph was nominated alongside, Fish F. Ndaramu, Msiz’Kay and Preyung (Cal Vin was also nominated).
On the sidelines of the RoilBAAs, Asaph revealed that he was happy to finally win the accolade.
“It feels good to finally win the Best Hip Hop gong, what makes it more special is that it’s now in honour of the late Cal Vin. He was such a great personality and he played his part in making sure Bulawayo and Zim Hip Hop at large gets appreciation in the world.
“With this award I can say, I am accepting the challenge that Cal Vin has left behind, and I know with other Hip Hop guys we will continue doing great in the rap game and continue representing Bulawayo to the fullest,” said Asaph.
The Bulawayo Hip Hop crown had always rotated between the late Cal Vin and his competitor Asaph as the two continuously gave the city an ecstatic ‘beef’ which always kept the streets talking.
With Cal Vin gone and the crown officially inscribed with Asaph’s name, it still remains unknown who else will challenge the “Burg” boy.
