FIVE men armed with machetes pounced at a Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa (Zaoga) church in Mkoba 16 in Gweru during a prayer session and robbed congregants before walking away with and assortments of goods.
The incident which has left Mkoba residents shocked happened on Tuesday night during an all-night-prayer session. Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident.
“Police in Midlands are investigating a case of robbery where five machete wielding men who were wearing black masks robbed congregants at a church in Mkoba 16,” he said.
Inspector Goko said the robbers escaped with US$22 and property worth $1 500.
“The accused persons ordered everyone in the church to lie down before force-marching the caretakers to her house where they took US$. They went back to the church where they took phones from the congregants,” he said.
Inspector Goko appealed to the members of the public with any useful information to approach the police.
“We are appealing to the members of the public who might know anything related to the matter that might lead to the arrest of these criminals to approach the nearest police station as soon as possible.
He also issued a stern warning against machete wielding criminals.
“I would like to ward these machete wielding criminals that the long arm of the law will catch up with them. And as police, we will not rest until sanity prevails in the Midlands province,” he said.
